Bible Stories of Conflict & Their Insights into Our Lives at Suburban JCC B'nai Aaron
Rather than providing us with images of perfect families, the Tanach presents us with pictures of family relationships that are often fraught with conflict and dysfunction. Why are these biblical stories of family conflict part of our sacred canon? What do these texts teach us about our tradition and about ourselves? By studying biblical texts about husband-wife, parent-child, and sibling relationships, we will strive to gain insights into the lives of our biblical ancestors and to find meaning in our own lives.
All are welcome. Classes are free. Classes are taught by Rabbi Lisa Malik.

Black-Jewish Relations Film Screening & Lecture at Highland Park Conservative Temple
Jews and blacks were allies in the American civil rights movement. But in 1968, a struggle over community control of Brooklyn schools pitted minority residents against a largely Jewish teachers' union. On Saturday, January 21st, Highland Park Conservative Temple and Center will screen " Brownsville : Black and White," a stirring documentary featuring those who lived through the conflict and directed by renowned populist filmmaker Richard Broadman.
The Brownsville Boys Club epitomized the spirit of cooperation that prevailed among Jews, African Americans, and Caribbean Blacks in Brooklyn 's Brownsville in the 1940s. Then came post-World War II urban renewal, immigration by Southern African Americans, and Puerto Ricans to the North, and the resulting white and black flight to the suburbs. Brownsville 's famous "School War" marked the decline of the coalition of blacks and Jews that had become a hallmark of New York politics. The film screening begins at 8:00 P.M. and will be followed by a brief discussion (speaker to be announced).
The film screening and discussion are open to the public at no charge, with a $5 donation suggested, but not required. For more information, contact Udi Shorr at (732) 819-9850, or send e-mail to: filmseries@hpctc.net

The Highland Park Conservative Temple and Center will screen a stirring documentary featuring those who lived through the the strike that changed New York: 1968 Ocean Hill Brownsville school crisis and the transformation of urban race relations and liberal politics in New York City and the nation. This film was partially directed by renowned populist filmmaker Richard Broadman and completed by his colleagues and students after his untimely death. The film begins at 8:00 P.M. and will be followed by a brief talk by Steve Golin and audience discussion. Professor Golin is a labor historian who taught for 32 years at Bloomfield College. His most recent book, The Newark Teacher Strikes: Hopes on the Line (Rutgers University Press, 2002), is also about a teachers' strike in which class and racial issues became blurred and which affected the status of Jewish teachers and administrators. Contact: Udi Shorr (732) 819-9850 or filmseries@hpctc.net . $5 donation suggested but not required.

Sing Shalom! New Prophetic Voices: A Musical Benefit for the Shalom Center at Mishkan Shalom
The Shalom Center will honor four prophetic voices of our own generation. Cindy Sheehan (of California) and Celeste Zappala (of Mt. Airy)-have indeed tried to confront a ruler to ask for what noble cause their sons died in war. Their action freed a whole society to take the question seriously. Jeffrey Dekro, founder of The Shefa Fund, found a creative way to mobilize the newfound Jewish prosperity of our own generation in the service of the age-old Jewish value of seeking justice. Judy Wicks, invented a restaurant-that White Dog Café-that took food for thought and social justice as seriously and deliciously as it took food for the belly. These four will speak, and several singers and choirs will remind us of the prophetic songs of Miriam, Moses, and the people for the week's Torah reading, the Song of the Sea, Shirat Ha'yam. Tickets are $36 in advance, $45 at the door. Then at 4:15 o'clock that day, there will be a Supper of Song where it will be possible to talk with the honorees (contributions of $360 per person and advance reservations required). The Supper will end at 6 p.m., in time for those who like to get home to watch the Superbowl kickoff. To register or for more information, please contact The Shalom Center at 215-844-8494.
