JSPAN Social Justice Award to Sheila and Dan Segal

On December 9, 2008, Sheila and Dan Segal will receive the fourth Social Justice Award given by the Jewish Social Policy Action Network(JSPAN). The award will be presented at a cocktail reception at the Independence Visitor Center, Sixth and Market Streets, Philadelphia, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Their influence on education, human rights, and social justice has been felt through so many parts of our community. As a couple, Sheila and Dan exemplify the highest standards of service and commitment.

Sheila's "first career" was in the world of Jewish publishing. Besides serving as Editor-in-Chief of the Jewish Publication Society, she is the author of two books, "Joshua's Dream" and "Women of Valor: Stories of Great Jewish Women Who Helped Shape the Twentieth Century." In the 1990's, Sheila trained to be a professional chaplain. She has served at the Madlyn and Leonard Abramson Center for Jewish Life and its predecessor for the past 12 years, the last six years as Director of Chaplaincy Services. Sheila also serves as Vice President of the National Association of Jewish Chaplains and writes about spiritual aspects of aging.

Dan is Chairman of the Litigation Department at Hangley Aronchick Segal and Pudlin. After clerking for Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall, he taught First Amendment and Constitutional Law at the University of Pennsylvania Law School. Long active in the community, Dan has served as President of the Juvenile Law Center, President of the Auerbach Central Agency for Jewish Education, President of Akiba Hebrew Academy, Chair of the Philadelphia Soviet Jewry Council, Vice President of Hillel of Greater Philadelphia and President of the Board of Overseers of Hillel at the University of Pennsylvania. He is also a member of the International Board of the New Israel Fund.

This event promises to be a moving tribute to Sheila and Dan, as well as a validation of the very important work in which they have been engaged for so many years to make our community a better place. The JSPAN Social Justice Award, given annually, recognizes noteworthy service to the community. Burt Siegel, Executive Director of the Jewish Community Relations Council of Philadelphia, was the first recipient in 2005. In 2006, the recipients were Andrew Chirls, past Chancellor of the Philadelphia Bar Association, and Larry Frankel, Pennsylvania Legislative Director of the ACLU, and in 2007, the recipients were Adelaide Ferguson and Alan Lerner, two area leaders whose commitment to human rights, education and social justice has been felt locally and internationally.
