Networking Central:
Progressive Group of the Month Corner

We all probably have other good ideas how to make use of our money and time to advance worthy endeavors. In this new section we highlight a new local group each month in order to encourage networking.

This month we present The Jewish Relief Agency. Stay tuned next month for information about the Shalom Center.

The Jewish Relief Agency

57,000 Jews in the Philadelphia Area are Struggling to Make Ends Meet... You can Help!

The Jewish Relief Agency invites volunteers of all ages to pack kosher, non-perishable food, load their own cars and deliver food directly to the homes of more than 1,650 low-income Jewish families.

According to a study done by the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia, there are 57,000 Jews in our region who are struggling to make ends meet. This is hard for most of us to believe, but it is reality.

The Jewish Relief Agency is trying to change that reality. Over the last five years, the Jewish Relief Agency has conducted monthly food distributions to reach out to the Jewish needy in our midst. Over 3,500 volunteers have participated in this effort and the J.R.A. currently serves 1,650 families. Volunteers deliver food staples including pasta, canned fish, fruits and vegetables directly to the homes of those in need. An average monthly distribution draws roughly 500 volunteers of all ages, providing individuals and families an opportunity to personally involve themselves with the vital work of making the world a better place.

Food distributions are held one Sunday each month from 10-1 at the J.R.A.’s Northeast warehouse (9986 Gantry Road, Philadelphia, PA 19115).

The next distribution will be on Sunday, August 7th, 10:00 – 1:00 and volunteers are needed!

Volunteers are also encouraged to donate gently used clothing, paired shoes (no high heels), and household textiles (sheets, towels, curtains, blankets) in garden-sized trash bags. Donated items will be sold and the proceeds will be used to increase the support given to needy Jews in our community.
